Plato is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Magdalena in Colombia .

geography

Plato is located in Magdalena on the Río Magdalena , 166 km from Santa Marta , at an altitude of 20  m above sea level. NN . The municipality borders in the north on Tenerife , Chibolo and Sabanas de San Ángel , in the south on Santa Bárbara de Pinto and Santa Ana , in the east on Nueva Granada and in the west on the Río Magdalena and Zambrano and Córdoba in the department of Bolívar .

The municipality of Plato has 61,856 inhabitants, of which 48,583 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, indigenous peoples lived in what is now Plato . The current place was founded in 1626 by Fray Nicomedes Fonseca.

economy

Plato's main industry is cattle production . Agriculture also plays an important role.
