Ciénaga is a municipality ( municipio ) in Departamento del Magdalena in Colombia .

geography

Ciénaga is located in the north of Magdalena, 35 km from Santa Marta . The city is located directly on the Caribbean , at the foot of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and northeast of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta , a lagoon from which the city takes its name. The parish borders in a clockwise direction on the parishes of Santa Marta, Aracataca , Zona Bananera and Puebloviejo . Ciénaga belongs to the unofficial but de facto existing metropolitan area of Santa Marta .

The municipality of Ciénaga has 105,510 inhabitants, of which 101,361 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 716,569 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).

history

Ciénaga was founded in 1521 and catechized by Fray Tomás Ortiz in 1538. The place had different names in its history, including a. Aldea Grande and San Juan Bautista de Córdoba .

The Masacre de las Bananeras (banana workers' massacre) took place in Ciénaga . On December 6, 1928, demonstrators from the United Fruit Company were attacked by the Colombian military . Many people died, with the information on the exact number of victims fluctuating widely and up to 3000 people. Gabriel García Márquez processed the massacre literarily in his world success Hundred Years of Solitude .

economy

The main industries of Ciénaga pond farming , animal husbandry and handicrafts . In addition, companies have settled in the community that are related to the coal mining of the Drummond company , transporting coal by train through the community of Ciénaga from the mining areas to the port.
