Fundación is a municipality ( municipio ) in Departamento del Magdalena in Colombia .

geography

Fundación is located in the north of Magdalena 35 km away from Santa Marta . The community consists of two parts: in the west the terrain is flat and there are high temperatures, in the east the community has a share of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and reaches heights of over 3000 meters. The municipality borders in the north on El Retén and Aracataca , in the east on Pueblo Bello and El Copey in the Departamento del Cesar , in the south on Algarrobo and in the west on Pivijay .

history

Old railway bridge

Fundación received the status of a municipality in 1945. However, settlement began in 1906 and was closely linked to the construction of the Santa Marta railway. At first the place was called Envidia before it was renamed Fundación in 1923.
