El Copey is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cesar in Colombia .

geography

El Copey is located in the northwest of Cesar at an altitude of about 180 meters and has an average temperature of 35 ° C. The municipality borders in the north Fundación in the Departamento del Magdalena and Pueblo Bello , in the east Valledupar , in the south Bosconia and in the west Algarrobo and Sabanas de San Ángel in the Departamento del Magdalena.

history

El Copey was founded in 1936 by José Antonio Gutiérrez and named after the balsam apple tree (Spanish: Copey). The place gained in importance because it was on the newly built road between Valledupar and Fundación . From 1953 El Copey was a Corregimiento of Valledupar. Due to the demographic and economic growth, El Copey received the status of a municipality in 1971.
