El Paso is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cesar in Colombia .

geography

El Paso is located in the central-west of the department del Cesar 130 km from Valledupar at an altitude of 36 meters and has an average temperature of 27 to 32 ° C. The municipality borders Bosconia and Valledupar in the north, La Paz Robles , Agustín Codazzi , Becerril and La Jagua de Ibirico in the east, Chiriguaná in the south and Astrea and Ariguaní , Santa Ana and Pijiño del Carmen in the Magdalena department in the west .

The municipality of El Paso has 23,534 inhabitants, of which 4046 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

El Paso goes back to a settlement that the Adelantado Alonso Luis Lugo founded as a cattle farm around 1540 on the way between the Cabo de la Vela and the Río Magdalena to supply the settlers of the region with milk and meat. El Paso received the status of a district in 1836 and became a corregimiento of Chiriguaná in 1871 . First in 1979 El Paso should receive the status of a municipality. However, this status was finally achieved only in 1989.
