Chimichagua is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cesar in Colombia .

geography

Chimichagua is located in the center of Cesar , 250 km south of Valledupar on the banks of the Ciénaga de Zapatosa . The temperature fluctuates between 30 and 40 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Astrea , in the south on Pailitas and Tamalameque , in the east on Curumaní and Chiriguaná and on El Carmen in the Departamento de Norte de Santander and in the east on El Banco in the Departamento del Magdalena .

history

In the area of today Chimichagua lived before arrival of the Spaniards indigenous people of Chimilas . The present place was founded in 1748 by José Fernando de Mier y Guerra under the name Nuestra Señora Purísima Concepción de Chimichagua .
