La Jagua de Ibirico is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cesar in Colombia .

La Jagua de Ibirico is located in the center of Cesar at the foot of the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders Becerril in the north, the state of Zulia in Venezuela in the east, Chimichagua in the south and Chiriguaná and El Paso in the west .

history

The name is made up of Jagua , the regional name for a tree that is common in the region ( Jenipapo ), and Ibirico , which is derived from the surname of the Spanish settler Miguel Ramón de Iviricu de Oricaín y Sinocaín. The name established itself from the 18th century. Previously the place was known as El Rincón . The year of foundation is given as 1771, even if a place in the same place probably already existed before. The history of the municipality is made up of pre-Hispanic villages, Spanish settlements in the colonial period and increased migration from Europe, the Middle East and other Colombian regions since the beginning of the 20th century. La Jagua del Ibirico received the status of a municipality in 1979.
