Aguachica is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cesar in Colombia . The municipality is the second most important in the department.

geography

Aguachica is located in the south of Cesar , about 300 kilometers south of Valledupar . Aguachica lies at an altitude between 50 and 200 meters and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on La Gloria and El Carmen ( Norte de Santander ), in the south on Río de Oro , San Martín and Puerto Wilches ( Santander ), in the east on Río de Oro and in the west on Gamarra and Morales ( Bolívar ).

The municipality of Aguachica has 96,667 inhabitants, of which 84,830 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Aguachica was founded in 1748 by José Lazaro de Rivera. The settlement was built around a hacienda called San Roque . Aguachica has had the status of a municipality since 1914.

economy

The main economic sectors of Aguachica are agriculture, agricultural products processing industry and trade.

traffic

Aguachica has a small regional airport, the Aeropuerto Hacaritama , from which charter flights to Cúcuta , Bucaramanga and Bogotá are offered. Aguachica is on the important Troncal del Magdalena road connection between the interior and the Caribbean coast.
