Puerto Wilches is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

Puerto Wilches is located in the province of Mares in northwestern Santander at an altitude of 75 meters on the Río Magdalena and has an average annual temperature of about 33 ° C. The city is about 157 km from Bucaramanga and 52 km from Barrancabermeja . The municipality borders in the north Morales in Bolívar , in the east Aguachica and San Martín in Cesar as well as Sabana de Torres and Rionegro , in the south Barrancabermeja and in the west the Río Magdalena and Cantagallo , San Pablo and Simití in Bolívar and Yondó in Antioquia . history

When the Spaniards arrived, the indigenous peoples of the Simitíes and Yariguíes lived in the area of ​​today's Puerto Wilches . Between 1870 and 1872, today's place was founded as Corregimiento under the name Bocas del Rosario . A short time later, the construction of the railway began, which connected the place with the area around Bucaramanga . Since 1882, in honor of Governor Solón Wilches , who promoted the construction of the railway. For the first time Puerto Wilches received the status of a municipality in 1887, which had finally existed since 1908. Puerto Wilches has had a river port since 1920. Puerto Wilches has only been connected to the Santander road network since 1985 . The region was affected by the violent conflict of the Violencia from 1948 to 1958.
