Oiba is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Oiba is located in the province of Comunera in southeastern Santander in the Colombian Andes 158 km from Bucaramanga at an altitude of 1420 meters and has an average annual temperature of about 19 ° C. The municipality is bordered by Guapotá and Confines to the north, Charalá to the east, Suaita to the south and Guadalupe and Guapotá to the west .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards lived in the area now Oiba the indigenous people of the Guanes . The modern Oiba was founded in 1540 by Martín Galeano. The name Oiba was the name of an indigenous cacique . In 1887 Oiba achieved the status of a municipality in the current sense.

economy

The most important industry in Oiba is agriculture . In addition to cattle production , the cultivation of sugar cane , coffee and citrus plants is particularly important. There is also pond management and beekeeping .
