Málaga is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Málaga is located in the east of Santander and is the capital of the García Rovira province . The city is located at an altitude of 2200 meters in the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . Málaga has an average annual temperature of around 18 ° C and is about 160 km from Bucaramanga . The municipality borders Concepción in the north, Enciso in the east, San José de Miranda in the south and Molagavita and San Andrés in the west .

history

Málaga was founded by Jerónimo de Aguayo on March 10, 1542 during the course of the Spanish conquest of what is now Colombia. Only two years later, however, the city fell victim to disputes between conquerors and was destroyed again. It was not until the end of the seventeenth century that a settlement and parish was built on the same site, called Villa de San Jerónimo y Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Málaga . Since 1987, Málaga has been the seat of the diocese of Málaga-Soatá .

economy

The main industry in Málaga is agriculture . In particular, pulses , corn , tomatoes , potatoes and tobacco are grown. There is also cattle and milk production .
