The Río Suárez

The municipality of Barbosa is located in the south of Santander in the province of Vélez at an altitude of between 1570 and 2050 meters in the Andes , with the urban part of the municipality at an altitude of 1610 meters. Barbosa has an average annual temperature of around 21 ° C. The city is about 214 km from Bucaramanga and 285 km from Bogotá . The municipality borders Güepsa in the north , Vélez and Guavatá in the west, Puente Nacional in the south and the Río Suárez and Moniquirá in Boyacá in the east .

history

The first settlement on the territory of the present municipality was Cite , founded in 1539 by Martín Galeano. From 1939 Barbosa was initially Corregimiento of Cite. Due to its size and importance, Barbosa itself became a parish and cite a corregimiento of Barbosa in 1940 . The city was named after the Spanish general Heliodoro Barbosa, who became known for fighting the indigenous people of the Ubazas .
