Puerto Parra is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Puerto Parra is located in the province of Carare in western Santander on the right bank of the Río Magdalena . The place itself is at an altitude of about 105 meters and has an average annual temperature of 26 to 30 ° C. Puerto Parra is 240 kilometers from Bucaramanga . The municipality borders Barrancabermeja in the north, Simacota in the east, Landázuri , Vélez and Cimitarra in the south , and Cimitarra and Yondó in the Antioquia department in the west .

history

The area between Puerto Carare and Vélez was specifically populated from 1826. The region benefited from the construction of the railroad between 1874 and 1927 and the settlement of the region gradually intensified. Puerto Parra has had parish status since 1981. The place and the community was named after the Colombian President Aquileo Parra .

The main industry in Puerto Parra is agriculture . Cattle production is particularly important .
