Simacota is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Simacota is located in the provinces of Comunera and Mares in central and western Santander in the Colombian Andes at an altitude of about 1050 meters and has an average annual temperature of 22 ° C. Simacota is 134 kilometers from Bucaramanga . The municipality borders Hato , Palmar , El Carmen de Chucurí and San Vicente de Chucurí in the north, Socorro in the east, Chima , Palmas del Socorro , Santa Helena del Opón and Vélez in the south and Barrancabermeja and Puerto Parra in the west .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous peoples of the Guamacaés , Yariguíes , Tolomeos , Arayas , Topoyos and Topocoros lived in the area of today's Simacota . Modern Simacota was founded in 1703.

economy

The main industry in Simacota is agriculture . In addition to cattle production , pond farming and fishing , coffee , manioc , sugar cane , bananas , corn , fruit , tomatoes and citrus plants are mainly grown.
