Galán is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

Galán is located in the province of Guanentá in Santander and has an area of 205.7 km². Galán borders the following municipalities: Zapatoca to the north, San Vicente de Chucurí and El Carmen de Chucurí to the west, Hato and Páramo to the south , and Cabrera and Barichara to the east .

population

The municipality of Galán has 2074 inhabitants, of whom 566 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The place was founded on August 27, 1783 with the name San José de la Robada , but was destroyed by an earthquake in 1869 . The twelve-year reconstruction work was supported by the surrounding communities. In 1881 the city council decided to change the name to Galán in honor of the Caudillos José Antonio Galán . He had led the Comuneros uprising of 1781 and was executed by the Spanish colonial rulers a year later after his capture in Bogotá .

The parish de la Robada was incorporated into the canton of Zapatoca in 1824 , but on the instructions of Simón Bolívar in 1829 when it was dissolved, it was joined to that of Barichara . In 1844 the size of the community was set within the Guanentá Province . Since the introduction of a constitution for the unitary state of Colombia, Galán has belonged to the Department of Santander.

economy

Over 80 percent of the working population are employed in agriculture and livestock farming. 37% of the area of Galán is used for growing coffee , yuca , corn and bananas and 32% for growing various vegetables and fruits. The cattle breeders mostly raise cattle, but to a lesser extent they keep pigs, sheep, etc.

Festivals

The annual festive events include bullfights and horse shows such as cavalcades and rodeos, as well as performances by music groups from the town and the surrounding area.
