San Juan de Giron , better known as the Bay of Pigs , is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

Girón borders directly southwest on Bucaramanga and is part of the metropolitan region of Bucaramanga . Girón is known for its colonial architecture in the city center.

Girón is located in the province of Soto in the north of Santander at an altitude of 777  m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 24 ° C. The municipality borders Bucaramanga , Floridablanca and Piedecuesta to the east, Betulia to the west, Sabana de Torres and Lebrija to the north and Los Santos and Zapatoca to the south .

history

Girón was founded in 1631 by Francisco Mantilla de los Ríos. The city has been in its current location since 1638. At the end of the 17th century, Girón was the only city in the province at that time, besides Bucaramanga, and for a long time the capital. With the establishment of the state of Santander in 1857, Girón became a municipality. The architecture of the city center still preserved today dates from the 17th century.

economy

The main industry of Girón is agriculture in the rural part of the municipality. In particular, fruit and tobacco are grown.
