Puente Nacional , also known as Puente Real de Vélez is known, a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Puente Nacional is located in the province of Vélez in the south of Santander in the Colombian Andes . The place itself is at an altitude of 1600 meters and has an average annual temperature of around 19 ° C. Puente Nacional is 219 km from Bucaramanga and 157 km from Bogotá . The municipality is bordered by Guavatá and Barbosa in the north, Moniquirá and Santa Sofía in the Boyacá department in the east, Saboyá in Boyacá in the south and Albania and Jesús María in the west .

history

Puente Nacional was founded in 1556 by Andrés Díaz Venero de Leyva. The place has been a parish since 1730. The local church is said to have been built on the site of the residence of the Cacique of the Sorogotas indigenous people . The place played an important role during the Comuneros uprising in New Granada .

economy

The main industry in Puente Nacional is agriculture . In addition to cattle production , the cultivation of sugar cane for panela , corn , coffee , bananas , blackberries , cocoa , guavas , beans , cassava and potatoes plays an important role. There is also timber industry .
