Rionegro is a municipality (municipio) in the north of the departments of Santander in Colombia .

geography

Rionegro is located in the provinces of Soto and Mares in the north of Santander at an altitude of around 590 meters and has an average annual temperature of around 28 ° C. It is about 20 km from Bucaramanga . The municipality borders in the north La Esperanza in the Departamento Norte de Santander , San Alberto and San Martín in the Departamento Cesar and El Playón , in the west Sabana de Torres and Puerto Wilches , in the south Lebrija , Girón and Bucaramanga and in the east Matanza and Suratá .

history

The region of today's Rionegro was from before the arrival of the Spaniards indigenous people of Guanes inhabited. In the 16th century the valley was explored by the conqueror Antonio de Lebrija . The place itself was first founded as Santa Bárbara de Rionegro in 1805 and developed into an important center for the production of tobacco , sugar cane , cocoa and coffee in the 19th century . Rionegro became known as the coffee capital of Santander (Capital Cafetera de Santander) . For a while the official name was Rionegro de la Inmaculada Concepción before the short version of the name caught on.
