Güepsa is a municipality ( municipio ) in the northwest of Colombia , in the department of Santander .

geography

The municipality of Güepsa is located in the south of Santander in the province of Vélez at an altitude of 1450 meters in the Andes about 245 km from Bogotá and 204 km from Bucaramanga . Güepsa has an average annual temperature of around 20 ° C. The municipality has a total area of 33.08 km², of which 0.3417 km² is in the urban and 32.73 km² in the rural part of the municipality. The rural part of the municipality is divided into seven veredas (rural administrative subunits ): Centro, Santa Rosa, Sonesi, Platanal, San Isidro, La Teja and El Rincón. Güepsa borders the following municipalities: San Benito and Chipatá in the north, Chipatá and Vélez in the west, Barbosa in the south and San José de Pare in the Boyacá department in the east .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the region of today's Güepsa was the border area of the indigenous peoples of the Guanes , Muisca and Yariguíes . The encomienda system was already in operation in the region in the 16th century . In particular, sugar cane was grown. A parish had existed in Güepsa since 1797. Güepsa received the status of a municipality in the current sense in 1886.

economy

The main industry in Güepsa is agriculture . About 75% of the area of the municipality is used for the cultivation of sugar cane , especially for the production of panela . The aim is to diversify agriculture.
