Barrancabermeja is located in western Santander in the province of Mares , of which it is the capital, about 120 km from Bucaramanga . Barrancabermeja borders in the north on the municipality of Puerto Wilches , in the south on the municipalities of Puerto Parra , Simacota and San Vicente de Chucurí . To the east are the municipalities of San Vicente de Chucurí and Girón and to the west are the Río Magdalena and Yondó in the department of Antioquia .

The municipality of Barrancabermeja has 191,340 inhabitants, of which 173,187 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The position of today's Barrancabermeja was identified during the expedition of the Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in 1536 and called Barrancas Bermejas . As a result, the place developed into a river port, over which in the 19th century a. a. Cinchona bark was exported by Geo von Lengerke . The importance of the place grew after the discovery of the oil deposits . Barrancabermeja has had the status of a municipality since 1922.

Until the 1990s , Barrancabermeja was largely used by various guerrilla groups, u. a. the ELN , the FARC and the Maoist EPL . On May 16, 1998, there was a massacre. A large group of paramilitaries moved around the city, killing seven people and taking around 25 people hostage, who were later killed. Since 2000, the city has been largely under the control of the paramilitary AUC as well as the military. Human rights organizations have documented numerous other murders and kidnappings by paramilitaries since 2001.

Economy and Infrastructure

Barrancabermeja is the center of an oil production area and owns the largest oil refineries in the country, which are operated by Ecopetrol . This is why the city is also known as the “oil capital”.

Barrancabermeja is developed through the Aeropuerto Yariguíes . There are flight connections to Bogotá .

Sports

The city's best-known football club is Alianza Petrolera , which has played in the Colombian first division since the 2013 season and plays its home games at Estadio Daniel Villa Zapata , which has a capacity of 10,400.
