Tona is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Tona is located in the province of Soto Norte in northeastern Santander in the Colombian Andes at an altitude of about 1600 meters and has an average annual temperature of 18 ° C. Tona is 37 kilometers from Bucaramanga . The municipality borders Charta and Vetas in the north, Silos in the Departamento de Norte de Santander in the east, Santa Bárbara , Piedecuesta and Floridablanca in the south and Bucaramanga in the west. The largest place in the municipality is the corregimiento Berlín .

history

Tona was founded in 1550 and named after an indigenous cacique . Tona has had parish status since 1832.

economy

The main industry in Tona is agriculture . Mainly onions , celery , potatoes , carrots , coffee , beans , cucumbers , peppers and tomatoes are grown. There is also cattle and other animal production as well as trout breeding .
