Two savvy professionals , also known as super professionals trump (Original title: Semi-Tough ), is a 1977 American comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie and starring Burt Reynolds , Kris Kristofferson and Jill Clayburgh . The film is based on the novel Semi-Tough by Dan Jenkins and grossed $ 37.2 million at the box office. The plot essentially revolves around two best friends, professional football players, who are in love with the same woman. In addition, Werner Erhard and his Erhard Seminars Training ( est ) are parodied. In the film this organization is called "BEAT". The film was reproduced up to "You are assholes, everyone", which was Erhard's well-known sentence.

Screenwriter Walter Bernstein adapted the novel and director Ritchie built in the parody of self-help groups and new religions.

action

American football pros Billy Clyde Puckett and Marvin "Shake" Tiller are friends with the attractive Barbara Jane Bookman. They both love her.

Barbara is the daughter of the owner of the Miami club they both play for. When Shake took part in a self-improvement course called “BEAT” (Bismark Earthwalk Action Training), led by Friedrich Bismark, he developed more self-confidence and Barbara fell in love with him.

Bismark warns Shake that mixed relationships won't work. Barbara joins this course out of love and tries to find enlightenment, which she does not succeed. She is disgusted by Bismark and his mania for control and double standards, while her friend trusts Bismark. BEAT helped him a lot and he became a better person and professional. Billy Clyde Puckett also joins the course and eventually exposes Bismark as a charlatan. He finally succeeds in winning Barbara over.

Production notes

Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson trained football to get in shape for the roles. They were supported by American football stars John Matuszak , Paul Hornung , Joe Kapp and Ed “Too Tall” Jones . The football scenes were filmed in the Miami Orange Bowl .

The actor Bert Convy took part in one of the Werner Erhard seminars in order to be able to better play the role of the course leader Friedrich Bismark.

Box office success

The film grossed $ 37,187,139 at the box office. Semi-Tough was taken as a pilot for a later television series in 1980 . Bruce McGill played the role of Burt Reynolds in this pilot . Next to him was David Hasselhoff in the role of Kristofferson.

Prices

In 1978 Walter Bernstein received a WGA Award nomination from the Writers Guild of America in the category "Best Comedy Adapted from Another Medium" (referring to the novel by Dan Jenkins).
