Life

Acting career

Hasselhoff (1986)

Hasselhoff had his first acting successes from 1975 to 1982 in the US soap opera The Young and the Restless , in the role of the youthful seducer Dr. Snapper Foster. The series was broadcast in Germany under the name Shadow of Passion on Sat.1 . Promotion photos in leather jackets and black swimming trunks established his reputation as a male sex symbol . In 1979 he appeared as Prince Simon in an Italian Star Wars copy called Star Crash - Stars in a Duel (Scontri stellari oltre la terza dimensione) .

Hasselhoff achieved his worldwide breakthrough as Michael Knight in Glen A. Larson's series Knight Rider (1982–1986). The series achieved cult status and was the most watched television series in the 1980s. It is still broadcast in some countries today.

The US television series Baywatch , launched in 1989 and comprising 241 episodes, flopped in the United States after its first season, was continued by Hasselhoff as executive producer in 1991 and achieved worldwide success. It is the most successful television series in the world and has been shown in 144 countries. In the role of the lifeguard Mitch Buchannon, he is the leading actor in the series, which ended in 2001. From 1995 to 1997, two seasons were also produced as a spin-off series Baywatch Nights , in which he works as a private detective .

1996 Hasselhoff received a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood .

From July 16, 2004, Hasselhoff played the leading role of Billy Flynn in the West End production of the musical Chicago in London for three months . A big dream came true when he starred in the musical Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway in New York in 2000 . In the movie Dodgeball 2004 he made a brief appearance as coach of the German national team. He also had a cameo in the Spongebob movie in 2004 . Two years later he played a role alongside Adam Sandler in the comedy Klick .

Hasselhoff also made an appearance in 2008 in the real-time strategy game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 , in which he was named President of the United States towards the end of the Allied campaign.

In 2009, Hasselhoff was also on the jury for the casting show America's Got Talent . He was a permanent jury member there alongside Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne .

In 2011 he played in the movie "Hop" - German title "Hop - Osterhose oder Superstar?" oneself.

In September 2013 he took part in the Sat.1 TV show Promi Big Brother , but left the show after four days on the grounds that his father was ill.

Hasselhoff's German dubbing voice was Andreas von der Meden , and since 2012 Frank Muth has also increasingly spoken of him.

Music career

Hasselhoff also devoted himself to his hobby of singing and dancing and released two albums with love ballads that were not very successful in the United States: Night Rocker (1985) and Lovin 'Feelings (1987). The theme song of the soap opera Nadia's Theme was sung by Hasselhoff for the album Lovin 'Feelings . In 1988 he sang a duet with actor Harald Juhnke in a television show in which the car from the television series Knight Rider was presented on stage . The two albums Night Rocker and Lovin 'Feelings were re-released as one album (Knight Lover) in Switzerland in 1989 and established Hasselhoff's success in Austria . Three tracks from this period can be heard in the Knight Rider episode Let it be me / I'll be forever your friend , in which Hasselhoff appears together with his first wife.

The mother-in-law of the German producer Jack White became aware of David Hasselhoff through a television appearance and recommended White to work with Hasselhoff. In 1989 Hasselhoff recorded the song Looking for Freedom with him , which after appearing on the television show Wetten, dass ..? in Germany it was sold over 70,000 times a day and took first place in the charts for eight weeks. White and Hasselhoff then recorded the album of the same name in White's studio in Kitzbühel , which in 1989 became the best-selling album in Germany. After his success, initially limited to Austria, he made his breakthrough as a singer in Germany. On New Year's Eve 1989 he sang Looking for Freedom on the Berlin Wall in front of over 500,000 people. He produced an album and several songs for Jeremy Jackson in the 1990s .

Hasselhoff's album The Night before Christmas was in the top 100 of the Australian charts in December 2005. The single Jump in My Car was released in 2006 and entered the Australian Top 50 charts, it was also the highest newcomer (October 2006) in the UK charts (3rd place). Jump in My Car was to mark the beginning of the upcoming world tour, which was originally planned to start in Australia in February 2006.

In 2015, Hasselhoff released the song True Survivor, the theme song for the trash film Kung Fury , a parody of kung fu films from the 1980s.

In September 2019 the album Open Your Eyes was released , on which he covered rock, pop and country hits. When recording the thirteen songs he was assisted by James Williamson , Elliot Easton , Steve Stevens , Al Jourgensen , Charlie Daniels and Patrick Moraz .

In total, Hasselhoff received over 45 gold and platinum awards worldwide.

In the 1990s, Hasselhoff, often just called "The Hoff", was the star who appeared most frequently on the cover of the youth magazine Bravo . There were also branded shoes that bore the Hasselhoff name.

Based on the legendary appearance on the Berlin Wall in 1989, the often ironically cited urban myth arose that Hasselhoff “brought the Berlin Wall down with his singing”. Hasselhoff has repeatedly rejected this: “I should probably clarify this once and for all: I had nothing to do with the fall of the Wall! I just sang a song that gave people hope. "

According to a study by the British Internet provider Pipex , which hired Hasselhoff as an advertising medium, no one was searched on the Internet as often as Hasselhoff. "I'm happy to be a hit on the web and Internet king," he commented in June 2006. He is also listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the "Most watched TV star in history" ( English for "most watched star in television history") ) and for the record of 70 m in reverse bungee jumping (in which one is catapulted from the earth into the air).

Hasselhoff advertised Hot Wheels in the 1990s and was the advertising face for Pepsi Australia in 2006. In 2010 he appeared in a commercial for anti-virus software.

Hasselhoff's name is parodied by the Foo Fighters in Long Road to Ruin . Dave Grohl plays the actor Davy Grolton in the video , who is the main actor as Hansom Davidoff in the soap opera Long Road to Ruin .

In the USA it is known that Hasselhoff was temporarily more successful in Germany than in his homeland, which has been caricatured several times. Allusions to this can be seen, for example, in the films Voll auf die Nüsse and Eurotrip . An extensive tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with 13 appearances was confirmed for 2019.

Personal

The paternal roots of the German-American Hasselhoff are in Völkersen (around 30 km southeast of Bremen ). Meta Hasselhoff, a great-great-grandmother of the artist, moved with her family from Bremen to Baltimore in the United States in 1865 . His other ancestors on his mother's side came mainly from England .

Hasselhoff studied at the California Institute of the Arts . He was married to fellow actor Catherine Hickland from 1984 to 1989 . In 1989 he married the actress Pamela Bach , with whom he has two daughters: Taylor-Ann (* 1990) and Hayley-Amber (* 1992). The marriage has been divorced since July 26, 2006. The family lived in Los Angeles , California . On July 31, 2018, Hasselhoff married Hayley Roberts, a Welsh saleswoman who was 27 years his junior and whom he had met seven years earlier. His biography Making Waves , published in autumn 2006, was the second best-selling book in the UK in 2006. In 2007 it was also released in the USA.

In 2007, a video was published on the internet platform YouTube in which Hasselhoff tried to eat a cheeseburger while still drunk. The video was made by his daughter Taylor-Ann and was intended for private use only. However, the camera's memory card was stolen (by someone known to the family) and the video was released without Taylor-Ann's knowledge. Hasselhoff has recently been in the headlines again and again because of his alcohol-related escapades. He admits his alcoholism and let the public know that he was alcoholic.

Hasselhoff has a special relationship with Berlin and the fall of the Berlin Wall. On March 17, 2013, he took part in a demonstration against the planned partial demolition of the former wall at the East Side Gallery in Berlin.

Others

2010 was a crustal species , which in the deep sea in hot springs near Antarctica was discovered by British scientists aboard the RRS James Cook nicknamed Hoff Crab ( Hoff Crab concerned), because of the abdomen (ventral) densely packed bristles the researchers remembered Hasselhoff's hairy chest.

In 2017 Hasselhoff appeared in the short film It's No Game , a film whose text passages were written by an artificial intelligence . Hasselhoff quotes various text modules from Baywatch and Knight Rider here .
