Knight Rider 2000 is an American television film from 1991. It is based on the 1980s series Knight Rider . The aim of the film was to test whether the audience was interested in a new Knight Rider series. The film was released on video in Germany in September 1992.

action

Los Angeles in 2000: In order to have a de-escalating effect in crisis situations, police officers (against their protest) are only equipped with narcotic weapons. The young policewoman Shawn tracks down an arms trade in which some of her colleagues are involved and is critically injured in an exchange of fire.

At the same time, Devon Miles is fighting for the Foundation to survive. Should the new, improved "Knight Industries 4000" (KIFT) not be completed within the ridiculously short period of 30 days, the mayor of the Foundation wants to cut funds and it would lose its status as the official investigative body of the city. Success is urgently needed, and only one can bring it about.

Michael Knight left the Foundation 10 years ago and retired to a house in the wilderness, where he is enjoying his early retirement and tinkering with his classic car. However, after some request, he agrees to return to active service and help Devon and the Foundation one last time. His only condition: his old partner KITT has to be there again. And so its old chips are collected again and, since its old, black chassis has already been recycled, installed in Michael's classic car.

Together with the policewoman Shawn, Michael and KITT go on a crime hunt again, in the course of which Devon dies, KITT gets the fiery red chassis of the Knight 4000 after an involuntary bath and Michael and Shawn expose and hunt down the mayor as masterminds of the arms trade.

At the end, Michael Knight hands over the symbolic "keys" for KITT to Shawn, so that from now on she can make life difficult for the crime in the name of "law and constitution" with the wonder car at her side.

backgrounds

The aim of the film was to prepare viewers for a generation change in the cast of the series. The appearances of David Hasselhoff ( Michael Knight ) and Edward Mulhare (Devon Miles) only served the purpose of making it easier for fans of the old series to get started with the new one. Both actors had announced in advance that they would not be interested in working permanently in a new series and would limit their appearance to the pilot film.

The (already shrunk) fan base reacted largely negatively to the film. The film flopped, so that further plans for a new Knight Rider series based on this concept were never realized.

The chassis of the Knight 4000 is a converted Dodge Stealth , which was designed based on the design of the Pontiac Banshee IV concept car from 1988 , which was not in series production . The original KITT was also based on a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am .

On November 27, 2015, Knight Rider 2000 was shown as part of the series The worst films of all times (SchleFaZ) on Tele 5 on German television, where it was commented by Oliver Kalkofe and Peter Rütten .

criticism

“Hard action entertainment in a science fiction guise; the critical accents remain attached. "
