Edward Mulhare (born April 8, 1923 in Cork , Ireland , † May 24, 1997 in Los Angeles ) was an Irish-American actor .

stage

After graduating from school, Mulhare first began studying medicine at the National University of Ireland . But at the age of nineteen he dropped out of studies to devote himself to acting. In the same year he played one of his first professional roles as Cassio in Shakespeare's Othello in the theater of his hometown. Engagements on various stages in Ireland and England followed. In 1951 he played Lodovico alongside Orson Welles ' Othello at the St. James Theater in London, in the following years he played a. a. alongside John Gielgud in Richard II. His international artistic breakthrough came in 1957 when he replaced the busy Rex Harrison as Prof. Henry Higgins for the musical production of My Fair Lady on Broadway in New York . Although Mulhare was too young for the role at 34, he received good reviews - not least because of his singing voice - and eventually played the Higgins for three years.

Movie

In 1953, Mulhare made his feature film debut, directed by Thorold Dickinson, in the Israeli war drama Hill 24 doesn't answer about the 1948 war in Palestine . It was also the only film that Mulhare played the lead role. In his film career spanning more than 40 years, he then only acted in supporting roles and embodied mostly aristocratic, correct and distinguished British characters. His best-known films include the agent film parodies Derek Flint sends his corpse (with James Coburn in the title role) and Caprice (with Doris Day and Richard Harris ), the horror film The Black 13 (with Deborah Kerr and David Niven ) and the war film Colonel von Ryans Express (with Frank Sinatra ). Mulhare had his last film appearance in 1997 alongside Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the comedy Tango? .

watch TV

Far greater success than in the feature film, however, Mulhare was granted in television productions. Here, too, his greatest success came with a role that he took over from Rex Harrison: Between 1968 and 1970 he embodied the ghost of grumpy Captain Daniel Gregg for the comedy series Der Geist and Mrs. Muir , who has to come to terms with the fact that a young widow ( Hope Lange ) and children move into his old house on the New England coast. This series was based on the 1947 film of the same name (German title A Ghost on Free Feet ), in which Harrison had played the ghost and Gene Tierney the widow. In addition to The Ghost and Mrs. Muir , Mulhare is best known to a wide audience through the crime-action series Knight Rider , in which he played Devon Miles , the serious boss of the main character ( David Hasselhoff ) from 1982 to 1986 . In 1991, Mulhare played this character again for the television film Knight Rider 2000 , who lost his life at the tragic climax of the film.

In addition, Mulhare took on guest roles in numerous television series such as Kampfstern Galactica , Baywatch Nights , MacGyver , Murder Is Her Hobby , Hard But Warm and The Streets of San Francisco .

He died of lung cancer on May 24, 1997 in Van Nuys, Los Angeles . He had remained single all his life.
