Murder is her hobby or Whenever she wrote crime stories (Original title: Murder, She Wrote ) is an American crime series with Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher in the lead role. It was broadcast from 1984 to 1996 on the US television station CBS . In 1988, the ARD showed 23 episodes under the title Always when she wrote crime stories . From 1990 to 2001 RTL and Super RTL broadcast the entire series in a new dubbed version.
action
The main protagonist is crime writer and former English teacher Jessica Beatrice MacGill-Fletcher . In the opening credits you can see a typewriter with which Fletcher writes her thrillers, in the later episodes you see a computer instead of the typewriter.
When her husband Frank Fletcher died, she wrote her first detective novel. Her nephew Grady sent it to a publisher and it was an instant hit. Now she devotes herself entirely to writing crime stories. She likes to travel with the income from her books and visit friends and relatives. Every time she is involved in a murder case, which she solves thanks to her excellent talent for combination. The coastal village of Cabot Cove in Maine is the home of Jessica Fletcher, later the filming and setting are often other cities, including not only the US, but also those in Europe and East Asia . She is often in New York for the premieres of her books or lectures and from episode 155 (season 8) Fletcher has a teaching position for criminology at the university there , for which she gets an apartment on site. From now on she investigates more frequently in New York.
However, some episodes are denied by other main actors, such as the private detective Harry McGraw who is her friend , Dennis Stanton , who has been transformed from a jewel thief to an insurance detective (for the first time in episode 90) or the British MI6 secret agent Michael Hagarty , also a friend of Jessica Fletcher. It then only appears in a short introduction. In further episodes she presents her new book or introduces the experiences of acquaintances. And in episode 113 (A Great Old Lady ; plays on the luxury steamer RMS Queen Mary in the 1940s ) she recalls an event in the life of the crime writer Lady Abigail Austin , a great role model for her. Then there were the adventures of her English cousin Emma MacGill .
Biography
Jessica Fletcher is a born MacGill, whose ancestors from Kilcleer ( County Cork ) in Ireland come from. She was married to Frank Fletcher and lives in a house at 698 Candlewood Lane in the fictional , 3,560-inhabitant coastal town of Cabot Cove , Maine. She has stopped working as an English teacher since she started writing crime novels. In her youth, Fletcher went to boarding school. She is childless, but has an unmanageable number of relatives, including a. a brother Marshall, who is a doctor with a daughter named Pamela. Her numerous nieces and nephews include Grady Fletcher (from episode 1), whom she and her husband raised after the death of his parents and who gets into trouble in numerous episodes. One of her nieces is Victoria Brandon , who is married to the unsuccessful actor Howard Griffin . After several girlfriends, Grady marries Donna, who comes from a wealthy family . Other known nephews and nieces include: Johnny Eaton (a football player ), policewoman Carol, and screenwriter Nita . The name and occupation of Fletcher's English cousin (Emma MacGill, vaudeville singer) are a reference to Lansbury's mother.
In the later episodes, Fletcher teaches criminology in New York, which is why she moves into an apartment in the "Penfield Apartment House".
Fletcher's books (among others): The corpse dances at midnight (1st crime novel); Murder on the racetrack (4th crime novel); The murder at supper.
background
Jessica Fletcher is said to be the American answer to the British fictional character Miss Marple . The producers made this connection very consciously, also made clear by the original title of the series: Murder, she wrote. Murder, she said was the title of the first of four Miss Marple crime novels starring Margaret Rutherford in the 1960s.
The American forensic pioneer Frances Glessner Lee is considered a historical role model for Jessica Fletcher .
Some of the filming took place in Mendocino , California , where Fletcher's house also provides bed and breakfast accommodation. Backdrops in Universal Studios served as the coast and main street .
Four full-length episodes were also produced between 1997 and 2003 -
- 1997: Murder Is Her Hobby: A Witness Disappears (Murder, She Wrote: South By Southwest)
- 2000: Murder Is Her Hobby : A Story To Die For (Murder, She Wrote: A Story to Die For)
- 2001: Murder is Her Hobby: The Last Free Man (Murder, She Wrote: The Last Free Man)
- 2003: Murder is her hobby : The Celtic Riddle (Murder, She Wrote: The Celtic Riddle) .
Many prominent guest stars such as Tom Selleck (as Thomas Magnum), William Conrad , Linda Blair , Leslie Nielsen , Dirk Benedict , Jean Simmons , James Coburn and Jerry Orbach (as private detective Harry McGraw, who later got his own series) were able to win for the series become. In 1986 there was a crossover between the series Murder is Her Hobby and Magnum . Angela Lansbury played Jessica Fletcher in the Magnum episode Competition from the Mainland (Original Title: Novel Collection) . The sequel came in the murder-is-her-hobby episode Murders in Hawaii (Magnum on Ice) . In 1997 RTL broadcast this double episode under the title Magnum and Murder is Her Hobby: Competition from the mainland .
