Joey Bishop (* 3. February 1918 in New York City as Joseph Abraham Gottlieb ; † 17th October 2007 in Newport Beach , California ) was an American singer , actor and show host .

Life

Membership in the Rat Pack

Joey Bishop was born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb in the Bronx , New York, in 1918 . In 1952 he met the American singer and actor Frank Sinatra and subsequently supported him in several of his appearances in the Club "Copacabana" in New York. Both became close friends and performed alongside fellow Rat Pack members Sammy Davis Jr. , Dean Martin and Peter Lawford at their shows in Las Vegas and in Rat Pack films such as Frankie and his cronies (1960) and The Victorious Three (1962). Bishop, who was a friend of Frank Sinatra's life until the end of his life, was one of the few people in his environment who could raise him with certain things and also got away with it. In this context, the following quote from Bishop has become famous:

Mr Sinatra will now speak of some of the good things the Mafia has done. ”(“ Mr. Sinatra will now be talking about some of the good things the Mafia has done. ”) This was, however, a 1960 Dean Martin joke that Bishop had adapted and adapted.

Activities alongside the Rat Pack

From 1958 to 1960, Bishop was a regular on the TV quiz show Keep Talking . He then played host of a fictional talk show on his own sitcom, The Joey Bishop Show , for a total of four years . The Joey Bishop Show ran from 1961 to 1964 on the American broadcaster NBC and from 1964 to 1965 on the CBS broadcaster.

The experience from The Joey Bishop Show and his well-known ability to improvise helped Bishop start a career as a real-life talk show host. First he was active as a permanent second host alongside Jack Paar in the 1960s , before replacing Johnny Carson a total of 207 times (record) on his legendary talk show. From 1967 to 1969 Bishop hosted his own talk show on ABC television, which was also called The Joey Bishop Show .

In addition to acting, Bishop began acting on Broadway in New York in 1981 . His first play was called Sugar Babies - a musical that linked Bishop's early career.

The last few years

Joey Bishop's last film appearance was in 1996 in Mad Dog Time , directed by his son Larry . However, Bishop was not named as a performer.

On September 20, 1999, Joey Bishop's wife, Sylvia Ruzga, died of lung cancer after a long illness. Joey Bishop died in October 2007 at his Newport Beach home at the age of 89. After Joey Bishop's and Lauren Bacall's deaths, Shirley MacLaine is the last surviving member of the Rat Pack .
