The Victorious Three is an American western with comedic elements from 1962 by John Sturges. The leading roles were played by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Sammy Davis Jr. The script was based on the poem Gunga Din by the British poet Rudyard Kipling .

The USA in 1870. Mike, Chip and Larry are sergeants in the US cavalry. They are stationed in a fort in the Indian territory. Mike and Chip try to persuade Larry to stay with the Army. Larry has planned to marry the attractive Amelia after his service. One evening the three men get to know the former slave Jonah. The trumpet player dreams of being in the army.

The Indians begin raids and terrorize the settlers. Chip plans to kidnap the chief. With Jonah he sneaks to a secret place where the Indians hold their ghost dance . However, Chip is discovered and captured. Jonah escapes and notifies Mike and Larry. Larry wants to rush to the rescue of his friend immediately, but Mike holds him back and has him sign a document that certifies his re-entry into the army. This document should make his help official, Mike will tear it up after the rescue operation.

Mike, Larry and Jonah rush to the site of the capture. But the three are also caught by the Indians. When a cavalry squadron threatens to get caught in an ambush by the Indians, Jonah is able to warn the soldiers with his trumpet. The US cavalrymen emerge victorious in the ensuing battle. The three sergeants are honored, Jonah is allowed to join the army. Larry now wants to go to his bride. But Mike hands the officer in charge the document that Larry has signed. Larry is now forced to do another service in the army.

Reviews

The lexicon of the international film about the film: "Western with star cast, which also adds parodic features to its large-scale battle scenes and has amusing effects."

The Variety found Martin's portrayal as the most pleasant and ambitious. Sinatra and Lawford, on the other hand, seem too businesslike.

Channel 4 describes the film as a listless scuffle in which the main actors play their roles in a friendly but ineffective manner.

As a top action drama , the film reached second place at the 1962 Laurel Awards .

The film premiered on February 10, 1962 in the United States. In Germany it first appeared in cinemas on July 20 of the same year.

The shooting locations were the city of Kanab and the Paria River as well as Bryce Canyon National Park in the US state of Utah .

The sons of Bing Crosby , Phillip, Dennis and Lindsay can be seen in small supporting roles as cavalrymen .

The film is a remake of Uprising in Sidi Hakim (USA 1939 by George Stevens ). In this film played Cary Grant (Martin's role), Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (Lawford's role), Victor McLaglen (Sinatra's role) and Sam Jaffe (Davis' role) starring. While the first film is set in India, the remake has been relocated to the Wild West. The biggest difference to the original film is that Jonah (Davis) survives and is accepted into the army, while Gunga Din (Jaffe) sacrificed his life for the soldiers.
