Tom Bosley

Thomas Edward "Tom" Bosley (born October 1, 1927 in Chicago , Illinois , † October 19, 2010 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American actor .

Life

After the Second World War , in which Bosley served in the United States Navy , he attended DePaul University in Chicago from 1947 . At the same time he made his stage debut in the musical Our Town with the theater company Canterbury Players at the Fine Arts Theater . Then he decided to pursue the stage career. Other theater stations were the Woodstock Opera House in Woodstock (Illinois), where he appeared next to Paul Newman in 1949 and 1950 .

Bosley achieved his artistic breakthrough in 1959 in the role of New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia , which he played for many years on New York's Broadway in the musical Fiorello! played and for which he was awarded the prestigious Tony Award . In addition, he found an extensive field of activity in film and television productions, in which he embodied mainly comedic roles. He played alongside Paul Newman in Der Etappenheld and alongside Lucille Ball in yours, mine, ours .

But he achieved international fame primarily through his leading roles in US television series. In the long-running sitcom Happy Days , he played the cozy and helpful father of the main character Richie Cunningham (played by Ron Howard ). In the crime series Murder is her hobby , Bosley was the clumsy Sheriff Amos Tupper , so that in his place the writer Jessica Fletcher ( Angela Lansbury ), a friend of his, always solved the murder cases. In the later crime series A blessed team , based on motifs by Ralph McInerny , he finally cleared up the crimes himself as the Catholic priest and hobby detective Frank Dowling .

He also made numerous guest appearances on television series such as Bonanza , Love Boat and Perry Mason . He also lent his voice to various characters as a voice actor in cartoon productions.

Tom Bosley died on October 19, 2010 as a result of a staph infection . His last appearance was in 2010 in the film Plan B for Love .
