season 1
Tree Hill is a small town in the US state of North Carolina and the home of the high school - Basketball teams "Tree Hill Ravens". The series is about half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott.
Dan Scott dated Lucas' mother, Karen Roe, in high school. When Karen became pregnant, he left her in pursuit of a professional basketball career. Shortly afterwards, in college, he met Nathan's mother, Deb Lee, who also became pregnant by him. Since Dan was unable to play basketball professionally due to an injury, he married Deb and became a car dealer. Nathan grew up with both parents, while Lucas was raised by Karen alone. She only received support from Dan's older brother Keith Scott.
Like his father when he was at school, Nathan is the key player in the Tree Hill Ravens. Lucas initially only shows his talent for this sport in his spare time, until the Ravens coach, Whitey Durham, is made aware of him by Keith. He then makes Lucas a member of the team. After Lucas' admission, Nathan feels threatened and tries, on the advice of his father, to cause problems for Lucas. Nathan gets the impression that Lucas is interested in his girlfriend Peyton and in return tries to make him jealous by taking tuition from his best friend Haley. However, a short time later he finds out that he has fallen in love with Haley, which is mutual. At first he is ashamed to be seen with her, but after a while he stands by her.
Lucas begins dating Brooke Davis, Peyton's best friend, after being turned down by Peyton. Peyton later confesses that she wants to be with him. Nevertheless, he begins a relationship with Brooke. Peyton and Lucas get closer again when their father goes missing. Brooke sometimes suspects nothing of the love between Lucas and Peyton until she sees them together through a webcam in Peyton's room. Eventually, Lucas ends his relationship with Brooke to be with Peyton. This, however, can not deal with the now prevailing hostility between Brooke and her and withdraws from Lucas again.
Karen receives the offer to attend a seminar in Italy for a few weeks. After initial hesitation, she accepts the offer and leaves Lucas in Keith's care. When Lucas and Keith are on their way to the airport to pick up Karen, there is an accident, as a result of which Lucas almost dies. The beginning romance between Keith and Karen is ended abruptly because she cannot forgive Keith for driving drunk.
There is growing estrangement between Dan and Deb. Deb eventually requests a divorce from Dan. Nathan, who is overwhelmed with the situation and already has a very tense relationship with his parents, especially Dan, is moving out of home. Meanwhile, Karen and Deb become friends. Deb becomes a partner in Karen's Café, among other things. Keith has to sell his workshop to Dan to pay for Lucas medical treatment. Dan had led him to believe that he was going to help Keith with it and that the sale was a formality. But no sooner has the contract been signed than he completely reorganizes the company and Keith gives up the workshop entirely. After Keith makes a marriage proposal to Karen, which she rejects, he decides to leave Tree Hill. Lucas decides to go with him after his recovery. He can't really deal with the emotional chaos with Peyton and Brooke.

Lucas goes to the garage to prepare Peyton's surprise (he was fixing Peyton's car after her accident). After looking briefly at the car, he goes into Peyton's house when he suddenly sees her lying on the floor covered in blood. He drives Peyton to a hospital where their baby will be delivered while Peyton is passed out. Peyton is in a coma for a few days after delivery and Lucas has to take care of the baby on his own. When Lucas is sitting at the bedside again and again and tells the comatose Peyton that he still doesn't have a name for her daughter because he wants them to decide it together, Peyton wakes up. Karen, Luca's mother, is taking the baby to the hospital and everyone is happy. Peyton and Lucas decide to name the child Sawyer Brooke Scott (the middle name in honor of Peyton's best friend Brooke). Thus, Sawyer is the second child in Tree Hill that has the former surname of the mother as a first name and the first name of the best friend as the middle name. Finally, mother, father and child leave Tree Hill in Peyton's car.

After initial difficulties, Logan understands his father's previous problems and spends more time with him and Quinn. Happy and grateful for how events unfold and Quinn's unconditional support, Clay makes Quinn a marriage proposal shortly before the end of the season, which Quinn accepts. The two don't want a big wedding, which is why they get married that same week and adopt Quinn Logan.
So that Clay can devote himself to his sleep problems, Nathan steps in for him professionally and travels to Europe. When he gets back to Tree Hill he is kidnapped. Dan, Mouth, Julian, Haley and Chris are looking for him. During a spectacular rescue operation, Dan is shot and dies as a result of the injury. But he can save Nathan, who is very grateful to his father. Dan walks into the light with Keith after seeing that, despite his bad deeds, the people who mattered to him mourn him.
