Sharon Elizabeth Lawrence (born June 29, 1961 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American actress .

Short biography

Sharon Lawrence grew up in Raleigh , North Carolina and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .

As an actress, she has made frequent guest appearances on US series such as Boston Legal , Cheers , Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , Monk and Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager . In 1995, she and the New York Cops - NYPD Blue cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Acting Company in a Television Series - Drama . In 2009 she received her fourth Emmy nomination for her guest appearance as the mother of Katherine Heigl on Grey's Anatomy .

In the Hollywood home games of the World Poker Tour , Sharon Lawrence plays for the Alzheimer's club and for the ALS charity . She also supports the World Wildlife Fund to save polar bears and other animals.

Sharon Lawrence has been married to Thomas Apostle since 2002.
