Alibi - your dirty little secret is safe with us ( The Alibi ) is a comedy film by Matt Checkowski and Kurt Mattila from the year 2006 .

action

Ray Elliott, a former scammer, sets up a company that gives rich customers alibis. These are mostly used to cover up their infidelities.

Since Ray wants to withdraw from the active customer business in order to have more time for the management of his company, he is looking for personnel reinforcement. After lunching together, he hires Lola, who was previously paid for assessing financial risks, as a new employee.

Lola's first assignment leads her to her customer Bob Hatch, who has cheated on his wife Judith with a young lady in an exclusive hotel, but is pulled out of the affair by Lola. Bob then speaks to Ray that in the future his son Wendell will also be one of the clients who use Ray's alibis.

Wendell Hatch is about to marry his girlfriend Sandy. However, he plans to spend a weekend with his lover in a bed and breakfast hotel in Santa Barbara . In order to hide this from his girlfriend, he needs the services of Ray, who quickly constructs the required alibi. This stipulates that Ray and Wendell swap identities for the duration of the weekend. While Ray, pretending to be Wendell Hatch, is at a stockbrokerage convention in San Francisco , Wendell goes to Santa Barbara with an ID card in the name of Ray Elliott. In their hotel room there is sexual intercourse between Wendell and his lover. This prefers sadomasochistic sex practices, but is accidentally strangled by Wendell with his belt.

The evidence points to Elliott as the perpetrator, who first invents changing excuses to protect his client. As a result, he is increasingly becoming the focus of investigators. At the same time, Ray Elliott is blackmailed by a hired killer known as "The Mormon" with his knowledge of the hushed up murder of Wendell's lover, so that Ray Elliott can also provide the Mormon with an alibi for a murder. Ray Elliott declines the offer, not least because the potential victim is his former partner from his days as a con artist. The Mormon refuses to let Ray Elliott turn down the offer, however, and offers him a long prison sentence for an accessory to murder.

Ultimately, Ray Elliott and his associate Lola Davis flee. They are being followed by the police, contract killers and the former friend of the woman who was killed. As a former con artist, Ray Elliott manages to lure everyone involved into a hotel. There he stages his own death, while his former partner can take the money from Bob Hatch that this Ray Elliott has promised to keep his son out of the murder case. Wendell is recognized by a man who saw him the weekend of the murder and arrested by the police.

The rich Judith Hatch finds out about her husband Bob's affairs. Ray Elliott and Lola Davis become a couple.

criticism

Josh Bell of Las Vegas Weekly wrote that the film was "not exciting" and "mediocre". Even the charismatic star Steve Coogan would play "colorless".

Erik Childress praised Steve Coogan, Rebecca Romijn and Sam Elliott on efilmcritic.com.

Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times on November 17, 2006 that the film's writers have more complications than they and the cast - including "a surprising number" of big names - can handle. The actors would act with a "pleasant routine".

The lexicon of international films saw some successful scenes, otherwise a lot of hectic and a confusing number of characters. The film could not leave a lasting impression on the critic.
