Alexandre Michel Gérard Desplat [ ˌalɛkˈsɑ̃ndʀ (ə) ˈdes'pla ] (born August 23, 1961 in Paris ) is a French - Greek composer . He composed music for over 150 film and television productions. He was awarded the Oscar for best film music for the music in the films Grand Budapest Hotel and Shape of Water .

Life

childhood and education

Alexandre Desplat was born in Paris in 1961. His French father and his mother, a Greek woman, met while studying at Berkeley College, USA. Desplat, who grew up bilingual, received music lessons from an early age. At the age of six he took piano lessons, with eight and ten years trumpet and flute lessons. At the same time, Desplat began to compose his first own pieces of music. He continued his training at the Conservatoire de Paris under Claude Ballif and at Le Atelier UPIC by Iannis Xenakis . Desplat then studied orchestration in Los Angeles with Jack Hayes . His fascination for American jazz and film music from Hollywood films later flowed into his work.

In parallel to his classical music training, Alexandre Desplat also managed to gain experience with the Brazilian Carlinhos Brown and the Zairian Ray Lema . He wrote his first film score in 1985 for Robert Guédiguian's comedy Ki lo sa? . Since then, Desplat has primarily made a name for himself as a composer of over fifty film compositions to date. He has worked for such renowned European directors as Jacques Audiard , Marleen Gorris and Patrice Leconte . For his film compositions in Audiard's films Life: A Lie (1996) and Lip Service (2001) he was nominated for the prestigious French César film award. In 2002, the theme song for the episode film 11'09 "01 - September 11 followed in which several directors from different countries deal with the attack on the towers of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. Desplat wrote songs among others for Catherine Ringer , Charlotte Gainsbourg , Kate Beckinsale , Michael Gambon , Nadia Farès and John Hurt . he also created the tunes for Karl Zero's album songs for Cabriolets and Eric Morenas Ô mon Bateau or Je suis le Torero de l'Amour . Furthermore composed he music for the French theater and opera director André Engel from the Comédie-Française , for Philippe Genty and for ballet performances.

International breakthrough

In 2003 Alexandre Desplat created the score for Peter Webber's historical drama The Girl with a Pearl Earring, starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth . The film score, which earned him nominations for the Golden Globe Award , the British Academy Film Award and the European Film Award, marked his international breakthrough as a film composer and made him known in Hollywood . He was again acclaimed by critics a year later for his collaboration on Jonathan Glazer's controversial drama Birth with Nicole Kidman , with whose disturbing score he cemented his place in the ranks of Hollywood composers. He is still working for European productions. In 2005 Desplat worked again with Jacques Audiard. In the same year, he received the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and in 2006 the César for the soundtrack to Audiard's drama The Wilde Beating of My Heart , which was inspired by the works of Johann Sebastian Bach . Two more Golden Globe nominations followed in 2006 and 2007 for the score for Stephen Gaghan's political drama Syriana (2005) and the romantic drama The Colorful Veil with Naomi Watts , Edward Norton and Liev Schreiber , for which he ultimately received the award. Also in 2007, Desplat received an Oscar nomination and the European Film Awards for his compositions in Stephen Frears ' Elizabeth II. -Biography The Queen honored. He teaches at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the Royal College of Music in London. As an actor, Desplat made an appearance in Josiane Balasko's comedy My Life is Hell (1991) alongside Daniel Auteuil .

In 2010 Desplat was working on the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows . He replaced the previous composer Nicholas Hooper . In the same year he was appointed to the competition jury of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival . This was followed by The King's Speech , for which he received his fourth Oscar nomination in five years. In 2014 Desplat was chairman of the jury at the Venice International Film Festival . In 2015 he received an Oscar for his music for Grand Budapest Hotel . He later also composed the score for Anderson's stop-motion film Isle of Dogs - Atari's Journey .

As part of the Hollywood Gala in Vienna on October 13, 2016, he was awarded the Max Steiner Prize of the City of Vienna.
