The 35th César Awards took place on February 27, 2010 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris . The film prizes awarded by the French Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma were awarded in 21 categories. The annual changing chairmanship of the gala in 2010 was the responsibility of actress Marion Cotillard . As hosts ( maîtres de cérémonie ), Valérie Lemercier and Gad Elmaleh led through the evening . The two actors and comedians had already moderated the event in the past.

The award ceremony was broadcast live on the French television channel Canal + and broadcast in German-speaking countries by TV5MONDE Europe . Tributes were given to the recently deceased director Éric Rohmer and the American film actor Harrison Ford .

Favorite films

Received two nominations for his leading roles in Der Retter and Le dernier pour la route : François Cluzet
Nominated for Best Actress: Dominique Blanc ( L'autre )

The nominations were announced on January 22, 2010. The favorite for France's national film award was Jacques Audiard's A Prophet . The crime drama, about a young prison inmate of Arab origin who becomes an influential criminal with the help of the Corsican mafia, had received 13 nominations and won nine prizes. Only The Last Metro and Cyrano von Bergerac (ten wins each in 1981 and 1991) were able to combine more awards . Audiard's film won among others in the categories of Best Film, Director, Leading and Young Actor ( Tahar Rahim ) and Supporting Actor ( Niels Arestrup ). A Prophet had previously won the Louis Delluc Prize and received a Golden Globe nomination and the BAFTA Award as France's candidate for the Oscar abroad .

The dramas Der Retter (eleven nominations, one win) and Welcome (ten nominations, no award) by Xavier Giannoli and Philippe Lioret were also among the extended favorites . In his film, Giannoli deals with the story of a fraudster (played by François Cluzet ) who has been released from prison . He settles in a small French town as an alleged building contractor, whereupon he is overwhelmed by the hope of the population suffering from high unemployment. In Welcome, Lioret took on the fate of the 17-year-old Kurd Bilal from Iraq (played by Firat Ayverdi ), who made his way across Europe to Calais in France . There the illegal immigrant pays a French swimming instructor ( Vincent Lindon , nominated for best actor) for one-to-one lessons. Bilal's goal is to cross the English Channel and reach London , where his great love, young Mina, is at home. Welcome was performed at the Berlinale 2009 and prevailed against A Prophet in the award of the French Prix Lumières . Lioret's film had sparked heated discussions months earlier after the director publicly compared the situation of the refugees in Calais with the persecution of Jews in World War II . Radu Mihăileanu's music film Das Konzert (six nominations, two wins), Alain Resnais ' Caution Sehnsucht and Lucas Belvaux 's kidnapping thriller Ransom (four nominations each, no award) were also represented in the Best Film category .

The seventh production in the Best Film category with a total of three nominations was Jean-Paul Lilienfeld's socially critical drama Today I Wear Rock! In this Isabelle Adjani slipped into the role of a teacher who is completely overwhelmed with her everyday school life among the immigrant children of a French suburb and takes violent measures to gain respect. For the part of Sonia Bergerac, Adjani received great praise from the critics and the fifth César as best leading actress after a break of several years. In addition to Sandrine Kiberlain ( Mademoiselle Chambon ), Kristin Scott Thomas ( The Affair ) and Audrey Tautou ( Coco Chanel - The Beginning of a Passion ), Dominique Blanc also competed for her fifth actor's prize. For her portrait of a lonely lover in L'autre , who is becoming increasingly schizophrenic, she had already received the 2008 Venice Film Festival Acting Award.

As in the previous year, the more than 3000 voting members of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma, which awards the Césars, almost completely ignored the successful comedies of the 2009 cinema year. Michel Hazanavicius ' OSS 117 - He is enough for himself and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs - Paris is ours! were only considered in technical categories when the nominations were announced, Laurent Tirard's family comedy Der kleine Nick alone in the category Best Adapted Screenplay. All three film productions did not receive any awards at the César Awards. However, Riad Sattouf's youth comedy Boys Stay Boys won the award for best debut film.

In the Best Foreign Film category, the US entry Gran Torino by Clint Eastwood received the César. Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon - A German Children's Story , Germany's candidate for the Oscar abroad did not get beyond a nomination. Sigourney Weaver presented the honorary award to her compatriot Harrison Ford . The homage for the late film director Éric Rohmer was held by the actor Fabrice Luchini , who had worked with him on Claire's knees and nights of full moon , among other things . Luchini read a text by Jacques Fieschi on this. Rohmer had been denied a regular César all his life.
