Coco Chanel - The beginning of a passion (original title: Coco avant Chanel , dt. Coco before Chanel ) is a French film by Anne Fontaine from 2009. It is based on a phase of the life of the well-known French fashion designer Coco Chanel . The script was based on the book L'Irrégulière ou mon Itinéraire Chanel (1974) by Edmonde Charles-Roux . The film premiered in France in April 2009.
The French film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, also released in 2009, deals with a later phase of the main character's life .

A few years after she left the orphanage , where her father left her and never brought her home, Gabrielle Chanel works in a country bar. She performs there as a singer and sews costumes for the other actors. The song, which she performs every evening with her sister Adrienne, is reflected in her nickname Coco.
She was introduced to French society through her liaison with Etienne Balsan. He also made her first major success in fashion creation possible by financing her own hat shop.
When she falls in love with the English businessman Capel, other opportunities open up for her - even if life becomes more and more complicated. Jealousy is awakened in Balsan through her lovemaking with Capel. This turns the attention to Coco and tells her that Capel is going to marry an English woman. Capel confirms the plan, but he and Coco continue the romance. Coco wants to assert herself and work, she gets the help she needs from Capel, who gives her money for her project and manages what she deserves.
criticism
The film has been accused of ignoring several dark pages in the biography of historical Coco Chanel, including a. their attempt to take control of their perfume production with the help of anti-Semitic laws, which until then had been run by the Wertheimer family .
