Life

Training and first film roles

Emmanuelle Devos was born in 1964 as Emmanuelle Jeanne Devos-Loscul in the Paris suburb of Puteaux , not far from the famous La Défense district . Even in her childhood, the shy girl, the daughter of two actors, was characterized by a lot of imagination, in that she invented imaginary friends to play with. After the 11th grade ( Classe de Première ), Devos left high school to devote himself entirely to the theater. She completed her training at the renowned Parisian drama school Cours Florent under Francis Huster , who gave her a small part in his 1986 film On a volé Charlie Spencer! procured. After a supporting role in Marc Cadeux 's 35-minute short film La pension (1987), she appeared in the first works of the young directors Noémie Lvovsky and Arnaud Desplechin , both graduates of the Parisian film school La fémis, founded in 1984 . In 1989 she appeared under Lvovsky in the award-winning 17-minute short film Dis-moi oui, dis-moi non at the side of Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Emmanuel Salinger . A year later, Devos worked again with the director on her 11-minute short film Embrasse-moi . Under Arnaud Desplechin she acted alongside Marianne Denicourt , Laurence Côte and Emmanuel Salinger in the 54-minute drama Das Leben der Toten (1991), which was awarded the Jean Vigo Prize , among others . A year later, Desplechin gave her a bigger role in his feature film debut The Guard , in which an aspiring French forensic pathologist (played by Emmanuel Salinger) finds a human head in his luggage. The thriller competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992 .

In the following years Emmanuelle Devos acted in both cinema and television productions in a wide variety of genres, but was always subscribed to supporting roles. In 1994 she appeared in Éric Rochant's thriller State Mission: Murder , in which the 18-year-old Frenchman Ariel (played by Yvan Attal ) is secretly hired for the Mossad secret service in his new home in Israel . In the same year there was a renewed collaboration with Noémie Lvovsky on the drama Forget Me in which she portrays Christelle , who suffers from a borderline personality disorder , but it was Arnaud Desplechin who helped Devos to her first success as an actress in Ich und Meine Liebe (1996). In his tragicomedy Desplechin tells of the disoriented and reserved 29-year-old student Paul (played by Mathieu Amalric ), who longs for a long-term relationship with his girlfriend Esther and starts an affair with the girlfriend of an acquaintance. For the part of Esther, Emmanuelle Devos received praise from the critics and was nominated for the most important French film award, the César , as the best young actress at the age of 32 . The actress, like her film colleague Jeanne Balibar , had to admit defeat to Laurence Côte, who was honored for André Téchiné's crime drama Thieves of the Night , but Devos succeeded in the following years with films such as Olivier Doran's comedy Le déménagement (1997) or Cédric Klapisch's science fiction film Peut-être (1999) to increase its popularity in France.

Success with "lip service"

Devos with her won César for lip service

With her ability to read lips, Carla and Paul succeed in taking revenge on society and cheating a group of criminals out of their money. Audiard's third feature film was a success with both critics and audiences, which was not least due to the performance of Devos and Cassel. The work was nominated a total of nine times for the César in 2002, including in the categories of Best Film, Director and Screenplay. Although Jean-Pierre Jeunet's internationally acclaimed comedy Die fabelbare Welt der Amélie paid lip service to it , the work won three Césars, including Emmanuelle Devos, who surprisingly came out on top against the favored Audrey Tautou ( The fabulous world of Amélie ) as best actress . The family man Jean-Marc Faure (played by Auteil) kills his wife, children and parents after wrongly maintaining a successful career as a doctor for seventeen years. For the role of the secret lover, which is also in the crosshairs of the murderer, Devos received a nomination for César as best supporting actress in 2003. In 2003 she was again seen alongside Daniel Auteuil in Pascal Bonitzer's crime film Kleine Wunden , which was represented in the competition at the Berlinale . In 2004 she worked for the fifth time with Arnaud Desplechin, who entrusted her with the female lead alongside Mathieu Amalric in the relationship drama Life is strange . While Devos had to admit defeat to the Belgian Yolande Moreau as best leading actress, film partner Mathieu Amalric received the César as best leading actor.

In 2004, Emmanuelle Devos, who three years earlier had supported Lionel Jospin's ambitions for the French presidency, got the lead role in Frédéric Fonteyne's drama Gilles' wife . For the part of the wife and mother Elisa , who uncovered an affair between her younger sister (played by Laura Smet ) and her husband ( Clovis Cornillac ), Devos was in 2005 together with the American Laura Linney ( PS ) on the Argentine Mar del Plata Film Festival . After a supporting role in Jacques Audiard's acclaimed thriller The Wilde Beating of My Heart , 2005 saw leading roles in Emmanuel Carrère's mystery drama La mustache with Vincent Lindon and Sophie Fillières ' drama Gentille with Lambert Wilson and Bruno Todeschini . In the same year Devos appeared on stage with Hélène Vincent at the Parisian Théâtre de l'Atelier in the tragic comedy Créanciers , which is based on August Strindberg's one-act play Fordringsägare (German: Believer ). The role of Tekla earned her a 2006 nomination for the prestigious French theater prize Molière . In 2007, Devos, who is now one of the leading actresses in French cinema, starred alongside Éric Caravaca and Jean-Pierre Darroussin in Jérôme Bonnell's comedy J'attends quelqu'un . This was followed by her sixth collaboration with Arnaud Desplechin on Un conte de Noël (2008), in which Mathieu Amalric was again her film partner.
