Close to paradise (original title: Au plus près du paradis ) is a French - Canadian - Spanish film drama from 2002. Directed by Tonie Marshall , who also wrote the script together with Anne-Louise Trividic .

The French Fanette, who has a daughter, processes her broken relationship with Philippe. She often watches the film The Great Love of My Life and dreams of a romantic meeting on the observation deck of the Empire State Building . Philippe writes her a letter suggesting such a meeting.
Fanette travels to New York City , where she wants to take photos of an artist's work for a planned book. She works there with the photographer Matt, who has a drinking problem, and gets closer to him.
Reviews
Christopher Null wrote on www.filmcritic.com that the director shows so little passion that the viewer doesn't worry about the characters. The chemistry between Fanette and Matt is "minimal" . The pace is slow.
The editorial team of Film-Dienst wrote that the "excellently played film" "permanently undermines the expectations of a romance" and questions "ideals of love that have to prove themselves in the face of disdainful reality" .

The film took part in the Venice International Film Festival as a competition entry in 2002 , whereby Tonie Marshall was nominated for the Golden Lion .
