The Savior is a French drama directed by Xavier Giannoli from 2009. It is based on a true story.

action

Ex-prisoner Paul is a professional fraudster and impostor who pretends to be an employee of a construction company and thus receives technology from suppliers, which he sells to the fence Abel. He also steals televisions and other things that he sells from hotels. He marks his route through France on a map. One day he reaches a small town. There is a motorway construction site not far, but it has been closed for two years. The construction of the motorway had to be stopped because the rare beetle species hermit lives on the site . From now on Paul appears in the village under the name Philippe Miller and poses as an employee of the company CGI, which had started the construction of the motorway at that time. Although there is nothing to be had in town, Philippe stays in a small hotel for the night. The next day two men want to speak to him. You are the owner of a construction equipment rental company and believe that Philippe is there to prepare for the construction of the motorway. You are interested in working with CGI and offer Philippe a 15 percent discount if he gives you the contract to continue building. He would receive the estate in cash. At a party shortly afterwards, Philippe also met the town's mayor, Stéphane, who aroused his interest.

Philippe decides to act as the owner of a subsidiary of the CGI, the fictional GMT R, which is to carry out preliminary checks as part of the further construction. He concludes contracts with various local companies that are commissioned to continue building the motorway. He always gets high discounts in cash. The city helps set up a work site and organizes the start of construction largely independently. Phillipe, surprised and overwhelmed by the action, hardly has to make his own decisions, as many processes can already be taken over from the start of construction two years ago. Functionally, he or she is guided by the suggestions of the foreman employed. The construction work begins; Since it is contractually stipulated that the supplier companies will only be paid in three months, no one suspects at first.

Philippe gets closer to Stéphane, who has been widowed for five years, and they sleep together. The introverted Philippe, who lived alone for a long time, blossoms and begins to get enthusiastic about the motorway construction project. At first he was only out to deprive the city's residents of their money, but now he wants to finish the motorway section before the payment period for the supplier companies expires. When the first early payments are necessary, he manages to obtain a loan from the local branch of the Banque popular . He also makes himself scarce, putting customers off to fixed appointments or incorrectly processing requested company records in order to buy time. Nevertheless, the residents and also the bank employees become suspicious over time. Philippe receives an anonymous letter with hints that he is not who he claims to be. One day Abel shows up and begins to blackmail Philippe.

Since the bank has stopped all cash payments, but Philippe only needs a few days to have the construction phase completed, he pays any bills with the money he has received from the supplier companies for the contract. The net around him is tightening more and more. A suspicious bank employee contacts the CGI directly and learns that they don't know about a company called GMT R there. Before Stéphane, who asks him about the rumors of fraud, Philippe admits that the construction site is built on lies. He committed the fraud because it was possible. In the end, Philippe only needs one day to complete the construction phase. He goes to CGI. He explains everything to those responsible there, shows construction plans and other documents, and asks the company to continue the work and to rescue its “team”. He is ready to atone for his mistakes, but nobody in town can do anything for his wrong actions. The CGI files a criminal complaint. Philippe is waiting for the police at the construction site.

The closing credits make it clear that Philippe was never caught. The construction work carried out up until his disappearance had been carried out properly. The beetles were relocated and the construction project was taken over and completed by the CGI. Only one company filed a criminal complaint against Philippe during the entire construction process.

The rescuer is based on the true story of Philippe Berre , who in February 1997 under the name Roger Martin initiated the construction of the A28 autoroute in the small French town of Saint-Marceau in the Sarthe department . The construction work had previously been stopped by environmentalists because there was a protected beetle population on the site.

Unlike the film, Berre was arrested and sentenced to prison. The motorway stretch that had been built was also not allowed to continue to be used because it was built illegally and had to be demolished. Director Xavier Giannoli went to see Berre in prison; he was interested in a film adaptation of his story, but made it a condition that it be shown that he had done his job well.

The shooting took place from December 3, 2007 to March 14, 2008 in Cambrai and the surrounding area. The working title of the film was Je suis parti de rien . The costumes created Nathalie Benros that Filmbauten come from François-Renaud Labarthe . The coroner of the real case, Laurent Leguevaque, made a guest appearance as the coroner in the film.

The Savior premiered on May 21, 2009 at the Cannes International Film Festival and was also shown in French cinemas on November 11, 2009, where it was seen by around 367,000 viewers. In Germany, the film was shown for the first time on the television channel arte on September 24, 2014 .
