The customs and packing house is a listed building from the 19th century in the East Frisian city of Norden , in Lower Saxony . It has the address Am Hafen 1.

The north had direct access to the sea through an expansion of the Leybucht since the 14th century. A seaport was created in the southern part of the city, which was important well into the 19th century and gave the city an economic boom over a long period, even if its trade was always inferior to that of the city of Emden . The north had its own trade flag , under which Norder ships sailed the North and Baltic Seas . In 1857 the customs and packing house was built. It is an elongated brick building . It is considered "remarkable because of its relatively elaborate detail forms, particularly rich in the gable to the city adorned with a coat of arms." In 1929, the embankment of the Leypolders , combined with the construction of the Leybuchtsiel , largely restricted the city's access to the sea. As a result, the port of Norddeich became increasingly important in today's urban area. The customs house was no longer needed. In the years 1998 to 2000 the building was restored on a private initiative and prepared for residential and restoration purposes.
