The Leybuchtsiel is a sewer structure in the city of Norden, completed in 1929 . It was laid out in order to be able to drain the newly reclaimed land after the 646 hectare Leypolders were dyed in 1929 . The Leybuchtsiel is located in the area of today's northern district of Neuwesteel, which has been populated since 1934 . At the Leybuchtsiel the Norder Tief flowed into the Leybucht . Due to the dyke-up of the Leypolders, the port of the city of Norden lost its access to the open sea.

The construction of the Leysiel , which was completed in 1991, has reduced the importance of the Leybuchtsiel in terms of hydraulic engineering. Since then, the excess inland water has no longer been sucked directly into the Leybucht and scooped up by pumps. Rather, the water of the Norder Tief flows through a newly created canal over several kilometers to Greetsiel and from there to Leysiel.

The Leybuchtsiel consists of a pumping station for pumping the water out of the inland and a sluice .
