Kenichi Horie

Kenichi Horie ( Horie Ken'ichi ; born September 8, 1938 in Osaka ) is a Japanese sailor and researcher who deals with single crossings and alternative propulsion concepts in seafaring .

life and career

Horie became known in 1962 for his solo crossing of the Pacific . In 1996 Horie crossed the Pacific again in a solar-powered boat from Ecuador to Tokyo ; in 2002 he repeated this trip in the opposite direction (from Japan to San Francisco ); he used a sailing boat made from recycled whiskey bottles. With the Suntory Mermaid II , he succeeded in crossing the Pacific again in 2008 with a catamaran that was powered solely by the energy of the waves.
