The term customs house refers to a building in which (historically) the customs or customs administration was housed.

Since customs formalities involved a certain amount of time spent on site, catering establishments were found at customs houses early on. A large number of restaurants and hotels therefore bear the name Zollhaus .

Customs houses were sometimes also set up as toll stations on highways to finance them, such as B. the old customs house Wennigsen on the Hamelner Chaussee between Hanover and Hameln.
