Xavier Giannoli (born March 7, 1972 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French director and screenwriter .

Life

Giannoli was born the son of the writer and journalist Paul Giannoli in Neuilly-sur-Seine. His mother Marianne, b. Frey, was the daughter of the former French Interior Minister Roger Frey (1913–1997). Giannoli studied literature and worked briefly as a journalist before turning to film. He initially worked as an assistant director. His first own film, the short film Le condamné based on a story by Jean-Paul Dubois , was released in 1993. Other short films followed. The humorous satire L'interview with Mathieu Amalric in the lead role of a journalist who tries to interview film diva Ava Gardner was highly praised . The short film in black and white won the Golden Palm for Best Short Film in 1998 and a César for Best Short Film in 1999 .

Giannoli shot commercials for a while and produced the 2002 feature film Demonlover by Olivier Assayas , before he made his first feature-length film as a director and screenwriter in 2003, Esbrennt in mir . In the story of the lovers Charlotte and Paul, who suddenly have to learn to deal with Charlotte's serious illness, Giannoli cast Laura Smet with her first screen role. Smet and her screen partner Nicolas Duvauchelle each received a César nomination for best young actor for their performances. Giannoli cast Nicolas Duvauchelle again in his following feature film I mustn't sleep (2005), which is about the encounter between a man (Duvauchelle) and a young sleepwalker, played by Ludivine Sagnier .

Giannoli first worked with Gérard Depardieu in his 2006 feature- length film Chanson d'Amour . The film about an aging ball singer who falls in love with a young, single real estate agent , ran in Cannes in 2006 in the competition for the Palme d'Or . Giannoli was also nominated for two Césars - in the categories of Best Film and Best Original Screenplay . His next film Der Retter with François Cluzet in the leading role was also contenders for numerous film awards, including the Palme d'Or in 2009 and eleven Césars in 2010, one of which the film received for Best Supporting Actress ( Emmanuelle Devos ). The film about a con man who pretends to be the owner of a construction company and can build such a highway in a small town is based on a true story. The film-drama Superstar , based on a novel by Serge Joncour and starring Kad Merad in the role of a suddenly famous everyone, earned Giannoli his first nomination for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2012 . He was invited a second time to the competition in Venice in 2015 for Madame Marguerite or the art of crooked tones . In it, Giannoli loosely took on the biography of the singer Florence Foster Jenkins , moved the plot to Paris in the 1920s and entrusted Catherine Frot with the title role. In 2016 he received three César nominations in the categories of Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
