Neuilly-sur-Seine ( French [ nœji syʁ sɛn ]) is a western suburb of Paris in the Hauts-de-Seine department with 60,361 inhabitants. The inhabitants are called Neuilléens .

Neuilly is one of the preferred places of residence of the established and wealthy French bourgeoisie , especially lawyers, business officials and celebrities from film and television live there. The community also serves as the seat of numerous foreign embassies and consulates in Paris. Together with the 7th and 16th arrondissements in Paris, the community is commonly counted as the wealthiest and most expensive residential district in the entire country.

geography

Neuilly-sur- Seine is bounded to the south and west by the Bois de Boulogne and the Seine ; in the north, the Rue de Villiers forms the border with Levallois-Perret . The avenue Charles-de-Gaulle extends the so-called ax historique of the avenue des Champs-Élysées between the Porte Maillot and the Seine in the direction of La Défense .

The western city limits of Paris run just outside the Boulevard périphérique motorway ring and the municipality and its territory form part of the residential district of Neuilly-Auteuil-Passy . Neuilly-Auteuil-Passy (NAP for short) describes the residential area of Paris, which borders the Bois de Boulogne to the west and north. The quarter therefore includes the Auteuil and Passy districts in the 16th arrondissement in Paris and Neuilly-sur-Seine to the north-west. It is one of the wealthiest and most expensive residential areas in France. Although the Auteuil and Passy districts became part of the new 16th arrondissement and thus the capital after the enlargement of Paris in 1860, and the municipality of Neuilly-sur-Seine has remained independent to this day, the area still forms a single, large residential district .

history

Neuilly-sur-Seine has seen several name changes throughout its history. The Romans called the settlement Portus de Lulliaco . Since the Middle Ages, the city has changed its name more often, first in Lugniacum (1224), then Luingni (1226). The root word consists of Lun (forest) and noue (swampy plain). Further name changes followed in Nully (1316) and Nullacum (1379). François I began building the Château de Madrid on July 28, 1528 , of which only the Boulevard du Château reminds us today . It was actually put down by a demolition company after its acquisition on March 27, 1792. Another castle was built in 1755 by Marc-Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy, comte d'Argenson, which burned down in the February Revolution on February 25, 1848 ( Villa Saint Foix ).

Until 1606 there was only one ferry connection to the north across the Seine. A badly loaded ferry was supposed to bring Henry IV and Queen Maria de 'Medici back from Saint-Germain-en-Laye on June 9, 1606 . The ferry capsized and the queen had to be pulled out of the Seine by the hair. Then Henry IV had a wooden bridge built over the Seine in 1606. Louis XV had a 219 m long stone arch bridge built by Jean-Rodolphe Perronet from 1768 , which was inaugurated on September 22, 1772. It was the forerunner of today's 250 m long Pont de Neuilly , which opened on December 2, 1942. The commune ( French commune ) Neuilly-sur-Seine received its status by law on December 14, 1789. The first parish meeting took place on February 7, 1790 in the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which was rebuilt between 1827 and 1831.

On December 15, 1840, a procession with the ashes of Napoleon I of Neuilly went through the triumphal arch to the Invalides . On May 2, 1897, the municipality was given its current name by a presidential decree. On July 6, 1815, Lord Wellington opened his headquarters in Saint-James. Today's town hall ( French mairie ) was built between 1882 and 1885 and was inaugurated on January 16, 1886. On October 28, 1909, the American Hospital Paris was opened in the presence of the American Ambassador Henry White . The Treaty of Neuilly was signed there on November 7, 1919 .

On April 29, 1937, Métrolinie 1 in the west was extended by two stations to Pont de Neuilly , namely by the stations Porte Maillot and Les Sablons . On April 1, 1992, the extension of Metro line 1 via the Pont de Neuilly stop to La Défense was inaugurated, whereby the sidewalks had to be narrowed and the bridge arches widened.
