description

The formerly independent communities Auteuil and Passy in what is now the 16th arrondissement in the far west of the city formed with the still autonomous Neuilly-sur-Seine under the rule of Louis XV. the possibility of building spacious residences in the countryside far from the city center, yet within reach of the political centers of influence. From the 19th century onwards, the entire area developed into the preferred place of residence for a new, established bourgeoisie who, in turn, were looking for a distance from the bustling city life, but were still looking for representative residences and city palaces in urban areas.

Although the Auteuil and Passy districts became part of the new 16th arrondissement and thus the capital after the expansion of Paris in 1860, and the municipality of Neuilly-sur-Seine has remained independent to this day, the area still forms a single, large residential district with some of the most expensive land prices in the whole country.
