The inhabitants are called Levalloisiens .
history
In pre-revolutionary France, in the area of today's Levallois-Perret, there was the village of Villiers and the Courcelles farm (also called La Planchette), after which two metro stations are named today. Most of the current municipality was added to the municipality of Clichy during the revolution , while the south-west of today's municipality became part of Neuilly-sur-Seine . From 1822 the landowner Jean-Jacques Perret opened up part of the area belonging to Clichy for the construction of a settlement; this area was named after him Champerret ( the field of Perret ). His example was followed in 1845 by the landowner André Noël in the area of La Planchette, where the actual development was carried out by Nicolas-Eugène Levallois, after whom the site was named Levallois. In the 1860s, both settlements had largely grown together and the desire for their own local government was expressed. Thereupon, Emperor Napoléon III approved . on June 30, 1866, the new municipality of Levallois-Perret received the town charter, which came into force at the beginning of 1867. The city became a center of early automobile manufacturing in France; So the companies Clément , Delage , Chapron , Zeiller & Fournier and last but not least Citroën decided for the location. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cosmetics industry was also well represented in the city.
An attack took place on Place Verdun on August 9, 2017. A BMW drove into a group of soldiers as the guard changed. Six soldiers from Operation Sentinelle (Operation Wache), who have been guarding around 1500 endangered objects such as schools, churches, places of worship and diplomatic missions across the country after attacks since 2015, were injured. An Algerian was arrested in the murder vehicle on a motorway near Calais . After a car chase, his car was surrounded by police vehicles. Instead of stopping when asked, he rammed a police vehicle. When he made a gesture as if to grab a gun, the police opened fire. The suspect was hit by five bullets and taken to a hospital.
administration
The city consists of two cantons:
- Canton Levallois-Perret-Nord with 40,400 inhabitants, administered by General Councilor Isabelle Balkany ( UMP )
- Canton Levallois-Perret-Sud with 26,532 inhabitants, administered by General Councilor Danièle Dussaussois (UMP)
Mayor of Levallois-Perret was in the years 1965-1983 the communist Parfait Jans , who was at times also General Councilor and member of the Hauts-de-Seine department. He was succeeded as mayor in 1983 by Patrick Balkany , at that time RPR , who left the office to his party colleague Olivier de Chazeaux in 1995, only to follow him in 2001, now a member of the UMP. This development is also an expression of a demographic change that made Levallois-Perret from a working-class community to a place of residence for the affluent bourgeoisie; the residents of Levallois-Perret are now, on average, among the wealthiest in France.
