Sofiane Feghouli ( Arabic سفيان فغولي, DMG Sufyān Fiġūlī ; * December 26, 1989 in Levallois-Perret , France ) is an Algerian soccer player who has been under contract with the Turkish first division club Galatasaray Istanbul since 2017 .

The son of Algerian parents who grew up in the greater Paris region , he played for Red Star Paris and Paris FC in his youth ; twice he completed a trial training at Paris Saint-Germain , but was rejected. In 2004 he moved to the junior division of Grenoble Foot in southeast France. At the end of the 2006/07 season he sniffed for the first time in the first team of the then second division and came on April 27, 2007 (34th match day) in the 1-0 win over Stade Reims at the age of 17 for his first professional appearance. By the end of the season he made two more appearances, on the last matchday he ran against HSC Montpellier for the first time from the start. In the summer of 2007 he finally signed a professional contract with Grenoble and was thus an integral part of the team from the 2007/08 season . That season, he played a total of 26 games in which he scored three goals, helping his team achieve promotion to Ligue 1 .

Also in the 2008/09 season , his first in the French elite league, Feghouli was used in 26 games. However, in April 2009 he suffered a serious injury that forced him to take a long break. It wasn't until August that he ran for Grenoble for the first time. After just five games, a meniscus tear in the knee was diagnosed, which again led to a long break.

Feghouli finally stopped playing in the 2009/10 season and then - recovered again - moved to the Spanish top club Valencia CF in the Primera División for the 2010/11 season free of charge . In the first half of the season, however, he came only to three short appearances in the league, the first on September 25, 2010 against Sporting Gijón . There was also a game in the Copa del Rey , where he scored a 4-1 win over UD Logroñés in the fourth round , and in the UEFA Champions League . His substitution in the 81st minute in the group game at Manchester United meant his international debut.

In order to collect match practice, Feghouli was loaned out in the second half of the 2010/11 season from UD Almería . There he was used nine times and was able to achieve his first two goals in the Primera División, but Almería had to start the course in the Segunda División at the end of the season as last-placed . For the 2011/12 season Feghouli returned to Valencia, where he became a regular. He was used in 30 league games (6 goals), seven appearances in the UEFA Europa League and six in the Spanish Cup, in both competitions Valencia failed only in the semi-finals. In December 2012 he was named Algeria's Footballer of the Year. In the 2013/14 season , Feghouli again reached the semi-finals in the Europa League with Valencia.

In June 2016, the Premier League club West Ham United signed him . After just one season, Feghouli left West Ham United and moved to Turkey for Galatasaray Istanbul .

National team

Feghouli was eligible to play for both the French and Algerian national football teams. His tendency was initially towards France and he already played several times for various French junior national teams. In November 2008, France coach Raymond Domenech even shortlisted him for the international match against Uruguay . Shortly afterwards, Algeria's coach Rabah Saâdane contacted him . After serious injuries and problems with his clubs Almería and Valencia, it was finally announced in May 2011 that Feghouli had decided on Algeria and would soon make his debut for the national team. On February 29, 2012 he made his debut under Vahid Halilhodzic for Algeria against Gambia , where he also scored the 2-1 winner.

At the African Cup of Nations 2013 Feghouli was in the Algerian squad and was used in all three group games (1 goal), but the team failed in the preliminary round.

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , Feghouli was used in seven games in which he scored three goals. He was also in Algeria's squad at the finals in Brazil and was part of the starting line-up in all three preliminary round matches. In the first game against Belgium , he scored a penalty for the opening goal . Despite their 2-1 defeat at the beginning , the Fenneks prevailed against South Korea (4-2) and Russia (1-1) and reached the round of 16 for the first time at a World Cup, in which, however, they lost 2-1 after extra time Germany eliminated.

In the summer of 2019, Feghouli won the African Championship with the national team . In the competition, the winger was used six times and scored one goal.
