Jimmy Touma Durmaz , according to some sources also Jakup Jimmy Durmaz , (born March 22, 1989 in Örebro as Jimmy Touma ) is a Swedish football player . The midfielder , who is related to the Swedish soccer players Sharbel Touma and David Durmaz , made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2011 . Due to the origin of his family from Turkey, Durmaz has both Swedish and Turkish citizenship.

Career

Career start in Sweden and national team debut

Durmaz grew up as the son of Assyrians who immigrated from Turkey under the name Jimmy Touma in Örebro. There he started playing soccer at BK Forward . When he was sixteen, he moved up to the men's team that played in the third division. With the club, the left-footer managed to qualify for the newly introduced Ettan in 2006 as third in the table in Division 2 Norra Svealand .

In summer 2008 Durmaz moved to Malmö FF . He signed a 4½-year contract with the Skåne club, which was competing in the Allsvenskan . On July 14 of that year he made his debut in the 2-4 defeat by Hammarby IF in the first division when he was substituted on for Jeffrey Aubynn . By the end of the season he was used in nine games and recommended for the Swedish U-21 selection, for which he made his debut on March 27, 2009 in the 1: 2 defeat against the Belgian junior national team. In April he took his father's surname, Durmaz. In his subsequent second first division season he was only used as a substitute, but in the course of the 2010 season he established himself as a regular player. After 27 appearances this season, he was one of the championship medalists alongside Daniel Larsson , Agon Mehmeti , Jiloan Hamad and Daniel Andersson . As a result, national coach Erik Hamrén nominated the former young international player in a short tournament in Cyprus for the senior team in February, in the 2-0 victory against the Cypriot national team with goals from Tobias Hysén and Marcus Berg , he made his debut as a substitute for Ola Toivonen in the 78th minute of the game.

In the subsequent Allsvenskan season, Durmaz maintained his regular place and moved with the team in the European Cup in the group stage of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , where they had no chance and was eliminated early. Nevertheless, he had played his way back to the national team at the end of the season and was called up by Hamrén in mid-December along with a number of newcomers - including his Malmö team- mates Ivo Pękalski and Pontus Jansson - for a January tour to Qatar.

Change abroad

For the 2012/13 season Durmaz moved to the Turkish Süper Lig to Gençlerbirliği Ankara . As a Turkish national, he played under the status of a local footballer and did not take a place for foreigners. He quickly established himself as a regular at his new club; with the team around Bogdan Stancu , Ante Kulušić and Radosav Petrović , he finished in the middle of the table. In 2013 other Swedes joined the club with Mervan Çelik and in early 2014 with Johan Dahlin .

In August 2014 Durmaz moved to Olympiacos in the Greek Super League for a transfer fee of two million euros . In his second game for his new club, he scored his first goal against OFI Crete . Nevertheless, he did not initially establish himself in the regular formation. He played his only game in the group stage of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat by his former club Malmö FF.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swedish squad and was used in two group games; the team was eliminated as the bottom of the group. From August 2016 Durmaz was active in the French Ligue 1 at FC Toulouse , where his national team colleague Ola Toivonen also played . In his first season he played 27 games (two goals) and took 13th place in the table with the southern French. In the following season Durmaz was used in 20 games in which he scored three goals, and finished the regular season in 18th place in the table, which was equivalent to the relegation in which Toulouse FC prevailed against AC Ajaccio and thus relegation managed. Meanwhile, he was used for the Swedish national team in the World Cup qualification in eight games; Sweden moved into the relegation as second in the group, in which they prevailed against Italy and thus qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .

Durmaz was added to the Swedish squad by national coach Janne Andersson and was used in the tournament in the group game against the German team. In stoppage time he caused a free kick by fouling Timo Werner , which resulted in Toni Kroos ' 2-1 winner . He then received racist insults and death threats on social networks, whereupon the Swedish national team showed solidarity with Durmaz. The Swedish Football Association filed a complaint against the perpetrators.

On July 2, 2019 Durmaz moved to Galatasaray Istanbul and signed a three-year contract there.
