Agon Mehmeti (born November 20, 1989 in Podujeva , SFR Yugoslavia (now Kosovo )) is a Kosovar -Albanian - Swedish football player of Kosovar origin. The offensive player, who made his debut for the Albanian senior national team in 2013 after several appearances in Swedish youth national teams , has played in his career so far in Sweden, Italy, Portugal and Norway. He won the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions with Malmö FF in 2010 and 2014 .

Career

Career start in Sweden and first championship title

Mehmeti, who came to Sweden as a refugee with his family as a two-year-old, began playing football at IFK Malmö . In 2001 he moved within Malmös to local rivals Malmö FF in the youth department. After he had gone through the individual youth teams, he was part of the first team in 2007 and received from coach Sören Åkeby in a preparatory game. In the 2008 season he finally established himself in the squad of the first division team, he played a joker role with the newly signed coach Roland Nilsson and played 20 of his 21 season games in the Allsvenskan as a substitute - only shortly before the end of the season he was in the game against AIK in October Starting formation. With three goals this season, he helped the club to reach sixth place in the table. He also played his way into the junior national team and made his debut for the Swedish U-19 team during the season.

As a substitute Mehmeti crowned the first competitive game in April 2009 with two goals in the newly opened Swedbank Stadium when he extended the 1-0 lead by Labinot Harbuzi to the final score in the 3-0 win over the Gothenburg club Örgryte IS . Nevertheless, he did not get beyond the role of the supplementary player in the further course of the season, but was part of the newly formed U-21 team in 2009, which should qualify for the 2011 U-21 European Championship under the direction of Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson . To the dissatisfaction of the player, he was nicknamed "Super Sub" as a permanent joker in the league. Together with Daniel Larsson , however, he formed a powerful storm duo in his third season in the Allsvenskan, so that he found himself on the one hand as a regular in the starting lineup and on the other hand in the top group of the scorers list. While he had conquered the top of the table with his club in the autumn, he missed participation in the European Championship finals in Denmark with the U-21 selection. In the 1: 4 defeat against the Swiss U-21 national team in the play-off games on October 7th, he was injured shortly before half-time. Recovered, he stayed with the club at the top of the table until the end of the season and scored the last goal for the club in the championship season with his eleventh goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Mjällby AIF on the last day of the game.

At the beginning of the following season, Mehmeti was injured in a game against IF Elfsborg . After a necessary several-week injury break, he returned to the team and established himself again as a regular player in the second half of the season. After the end of the Allsvenskan season he announced his move to Italy. Before he went to US Palermo , where he signed a five-year contract, he played for his previous club until the end of the preliminary round in the UEFA Europa League .

Change abroad

In his first six months in Italy, Mehmeti did not get beyond the status of a supplementary player, he only booked three season appearances up to the summer of 2012. In August of that year, shortly before the end of the transfer period , he switched to relegated Novara Calcio in exchange with Luigi Giorgi on loan the series B . There he was a regular player for long stretches, despite his six goals this season, the team missed direct promotion as fifth in the table. After his return to US Palermo at the end of the season, the club loaned him again for a season in July 2013, this time to the Portuguese club SC Olhanense . At the same time, the former Swedish junior international became the focus of those responsible for the Albanian national team . In 2013 he made his debut for the Southeast European national team, but was unable to establish himself permanently.

Return to Sweden, short stints in the Champions League and another trip abroad

In July 2014, Mehmeti returned to Sweden and rejoined Malmö FF. While he defended the national title with the reigning Swedish champions in the second half of the season, he reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League with the team for the first time in the club's history . As a replacement for the cruciate ligament injured Guillermo Molins , he did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player under coach Åge Hareide . By the end of the season he played only five of his ten season appearances in the starting line-up, and he only played in the main round of the European Cup as a substitute for Markus Rosenberg in the 2-0 away defeat at the later finalists Juventus Turin . As the bottom of the group, he missed a winter in the European Cup with the team around Isaac Kiese Thelin , Emil Forsberg , Pa Konate , Robin Olsen and Magnus Eriksson .

Even in the 2015 season, Mehmeti did not prevail as a regular player in the Himmelblauen. For the club from Skåne he only played four games in the championship at kick-off, with a total of 15 games this season he played just half of all possible appearances. In qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, he was only substituted at the home games against Žalgiris Vilnius and Celtic Glasgow and was only brought on by coach Hareide after another successful promotion to the group stage in a 2-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk - the only success in the group stage in the 2015/16 season - and the final 8-0 debacle at the eventual title holder Real Madrid .

Nevertheless, Mehmeti initially remained loyal to the club despite low stakes and played the preparation for the 2016 season under the new coach Allan Kuhn with the Swedish club. In mid-March, however, he moved to the Norwegian club Stabæk Fotball a few days before the end of the winter change period . After the 2016 championship had already started in Norway , he made his debut against Molde FK on matchday two and was a regular player for long periods in the following period.

In January 2017 he moved to the Turkish first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara , but left this prematurely in the summer of 2017 and joined the English third division club Oxford United . Since 2019 he has been under contract with Örebro SK in Sweden .
