Forsberg stayed in Allsvenskan and signed a four-year contract with Malmö FF in December 2012 . Under coach Rikard Norling , he initially switched between the starting eleven and substitutes' bench, but established himself as a regular player over the course of the 2013 season and ultimately contributed to winning the championship with five goals this season. National coach Erik Hamrén honored his achievements over the course of the season in December 2013 when he nominated him for the senior national team . In January 2014, he made his debut in the 2-1 win against Moldova in the national jersey and subsequently stayed in the extended circle of the national team. At club level, he excelled as a regular goalscorer in the Swedish championship. With the team around Markus Rosenberg , Ricardinho , Robin Olsen and Markus Halsti , he qualified for the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in the club's history in the summer . In November he defended the Swedish championship title with the team and was the second-best internal scorer with 14 goals this season behind the once more successful Rosenberg. A few weeks later, the team was bottom of the group in the Champions League and missed the European Cup.

On January 7, 2015 Forsberg moved to Germany for the then second division club RB Leipzig . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. In his first season for RB Leipzig he went without a goal and missed promotion to the Bundesliga with the team . In the 2015/16 season he scored eight goals, prepared seven and became the best-rated player of the entire season in the trade magazine kicker . At the end of the season Forsberg rose with the team as runner-up in the Bundesliga. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 28, 2016 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 away game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .
